Vorticity

When you look at a surface weather map, you know that lows are placed where the pressure is lower than its surroundings, and highs are located where the pressure is higher than its surroundings. Likewise, there are areas of higher and lower absolute vorticity around the globe. Instead of marking them with L's and H's as highs and lows are indicated, N's and X's are used.

An "N" on the upper left panel represents an area of minimum absolute vorticity. An "X" on the upper left panel represents an area of maximum absolute vorticity.

Try to locate some of these on the upper left panel. In Figure 7 below, the maxes are shown in red and the mins are shown in blue.
