Upper Right Hand Panel

Decoding The Nonsense

It may look like a foreign language, but those numbers at the bottom of the upper right hand panel mean something.

Lets look at each component...

NGM MSL Pressure 010116/1200V012 NGM MSL Pressure AABBCC/DDDDVEEE

NGM is just the type of model. There are also ETA and AVN with similar formats.

MSL Pressure is simply "mean sea level pressure" (solid black lines).

AA is the year (01).
BB is the month (01).
CC is the day (16).
DDDD is the time in Z that the model was initialized or started (1200Z).
V means verifies or when this should happen.
EEE is how many hours out from the initialization timeout it will verify (012 hours)

Not too difficult; in fact; it makes a lot of sense.

The second line looks as follows. NGM 1000-500 mb Thickness 010116/1200V012 or NGM 1000-500 mb Thickness AABBCC/DDDDVEEE The first part is slightly different. NGM is still the name of the model. 1000-500 mb Thickness is what the name says (dashed green lines) The rest follows the same as the previous section. So next time you look at the map wall, don't be afraid of the models; you know what they mean.
