Heights

How do varying temperatures show up on a 500mb map?

When dealing with 500mb heights, the average temperature in a column of air, not just the temperature at the ground or 500mb, must be considered. Higher average temperatures in a column of air correspond to higher 500mb heights, and colder average temperatures in a column of air correspond to lower 500mb heights.

In Figure 5 above, the 500mb height line changes from Pittsburgh to Philadelphia.  Where the line mounds upward, we have a "mountain" of warmer air. Where the line dips downward, we have a "valley" of colder air.
