The following diagram depicts a strong temperature gradient. Notice the tight packing of the
isotherms or lines of constant temperature. Assuming that the only temperature change results from advection,
the mercury will fall very rapidly over a short distance in this example.
Here we have a situation in which there is a very small temperature gradient.
Take note at the wide spacing between the isotherms. It will take the mercury a
lot longer to fall in this example.
